Boy, 10, Dies In Washington Heights Fire, 18-Year-Old Brother Critically Injured

The boy was found on the living room couch with smoke inhalation, according to news reports.

CHICAGO—A 10-year-old boy died, and an 18-year-old man was critically injured during an overnight fire Monday in Washington Heights.

Just before 3:30 a.m., the Chicago police and fire departments responded to a residential fire in the 10400 block of Green Street. Officials said the mother and father were able to escape the home uninjured.

Firefighters found the 10-year-old boy, who was immediately transported to Roseland Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Family members identified him as London Woodard, WGN 9 News reported.

They found him on the couch in the living room with smoke inhalation. The only thing that caught fire in the house was the couch, and that’s where they found him,” the boy’s grandfather told WGN.

London’s 18-year-old brother was also taken in critical condition to Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Evergreen Park.
