2 Chicago Police Officers Injured in Shootout on South Side

Gunman also wounded and taken into surgery.

Chicago Police officers traded gunfire with a man on the South Side late Friday night at 93rd Street and Wallace Street in the Brainerd neighborhood.

Anti-gang unit officers stopped a car at about 11:30 p.m. Friday and the man who was a passenger in the car began firing. One officer was shot in the leg and the other in the torso, the bullet striking his protective vest. Police returned fire and wounded the shooter and a woman in the car.

The officers, both of whom have been decorated by the department, were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. One is 38 years old and the other is 31.

The shooter was also taken to Advocate Christ and underwent surgery. The woman in the car was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park.
