King Lockhart Park is the site of the 9/11 First Responders Monument, which features a steel beam donated in memory and honor of CFD Captain Herbie Johnson, who worked in New York in the aftermath of 9/11. Johnson died in November 2012 fighting a house fire in Englewood.
The park honors two Chicago firefighters who lost their lives battling a fire at a Beverly tire shop that formerly occupied the site in 1998. Nearby is a memorial in the shape of a CFD shield, honoring Patrick J. King, the product of a Southwest Side firefighting family, and Anthony Lockhart, a Chicago’s Dunbar High School graduate, who realized his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter after 14 years of working for the U.S. Postal Service.
