Southsiders for Peace Hold 'Save The Post Office' Protests
Southsiders for Peace and postal unions will hold demonstrations to save the post office and fight voter suppression.

CHICAGO — South Side activists and postal unions will be joining thousands of citizens across the country who are staging protests to protect the essential services provided by the United States Postal Service, including the ability to vote by mail and support for the USPS Fairness Act HR 2382.Delays in mail service have been reported locally and nationally.

Activists are calling for the removal of GOP fundraiser Louis DeJoy as postmaster general, and stopping voter suppression. DeJoy issued a statement earlier this week that he would back off the policy changes he made, such as the removal of high volume letter sorters and blue collection boxes, reportedly to avoid "even the appearance of any impact on election mail."

Three demonstrations are planned for the South Side in the coming week:
- Henry McGee Post Office, 4601 S. Cottage Grove Ave., Chicago, 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. Sponsored by the American Postal Workers Union and the National Association of Letter Carriers Mail Handlers Union.
- Southsiders for Peace, 103rd Street and Western Avenue, 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22.
- Moraine Valley Post Office, 7401 W. 100th Place, Bridgeview, 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25. Sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers and Southsiders for Peace.
MoveOn.org and other national organizations are calling for a nationwide day of action to “protect and save the post office from Donald Trump” at post offices throughout the United States this Saturday.
