Advocacy Group Discerns Future of Women Deacons At St. Barnabas
South Side parishes and high schools host Discerning Deacons in conversation about women becoming deacons Sunday, March 27, at St. Barnabas.
CHICAGO — Should women be allowed to become deacons in the Catholic Church? South Side parishes and Catholic high schools will co-host a community conversation this Sunday, March 27. The conversation starts at 7 p.m. at St. Barnabas Parish, 10134 S. Longwood Drive, Chicago.
Discerning Deacons, a national advocacy group, will lead the conversation on the history and current discussions of women deacons. The advocacy group is collection feedback from across the country. Feedback from the discussions will be shared with Pope Francis in Rome.
The Synod is a two-year process of listening and dialogue among dioceses that began with a solemn opening in Rome last October. The synodal process will conclude in 2023.

Sunday’s conversation is an all-age event, and St. Barnabas has partnered with Christ the King, Old St. Patrick’s, St. Cajetan, St. Christina, St. John Fisher and St. Margaret of Scotland parishes and other Catholic groups, including local Catholic high schools Mother McAuley, Brother Rice, St. Rita, De Paul College Prep, Marist, Mount Carmel, De LaSalle and Leo.
