Beverly Woman Wins Science And Tech Award

Dr. Sandra Biedron will be honored for her work on particle accelerators at the Argonne National Laboratory.

CHICAGO, IL - A Beverly scientist won the Particle Accelerator Science and Technology Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Dr. Sandra Biedron will be presented with the award at a conference in Vancouver in May, according to a news release. She was selected for her “broad impact in accelerator science and technology.”

Biedron is one of two people to receive the award from the IEEE, which presents it to two influential people in the science community every other year. She and Dr. Hermann Grunder are winners for 2018 for their work in the field of particle accelerator science while working at the Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont.

Biedron served as the director of the Department of Defense Project Office at Argonne, among other positions.

“I have had a great career so far, doing very interesting research and development with people around that globe that I consider family,” she said. “I feel like this prize is a union card to go on and do more research, more service and more mentoring. It is an affirmation that my efforts are in the correct direction.”

Biedron’s husband, Stephen Milton, received the same award in 2003. The couple, who own homes in Beverly and Colorado, considers the South Side of Chicago home although they live and work throughout the world. Biedron recently joined the University of New Mexico’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as a research professor.

“My neighbors here in Beverly and Morgan Park are always so supportive. It’s like having my own cheerleading team, and I owe a great deal of thanks to them and my entire family,” Biedron said.
