Cash Mob At Ellie's Cafe A Success: Owner

Hundreds stopped at Ellie's Cafe last week to be part of a cash mob that was organized in response to a weekend burglary.

CHICAGO, IL - Neighborhood residents and others came together to support a local favorite in large numbers last week. A snowy afternoon did little to prevent hundreds from supporting Ellie's Cafe at the corner of 107th and Hale in Beverly/Morgan Park in a planned "cash mob" event that owner Cathy Stacey says was well attended.

It was "taking the time to howl at the jerks of the world with me in solidarity," Stacey said.

The "jerks" Stacey is referring to are the thieves who entered the business overnight a week before and stole money from the cash register as well as a stash of server's tips. READ MORE: Cash Mob Planned At Ellie's Cafe After Thieves Broke In

The local Southwest Chicago Diversity Collaborative group responded by organizing a "cash mob" of support for April 5. Loyal customers and first-timers alike followed through and ordered off the menu that day.

"What was most gratifying was that people took the time, went out of their way, to come in and let me know they were thinking about Ellie's," she said. "It feels good to know that I'm surrounded by thoughtful and generous friends."
