Catalytic Converter Crooks Targeting SUVS in Beverly, Morgan Park: Cops

Witnesses reported the thieves were driving a black Mercedes, cops say.

Police are looking for a pair of catalytic converter crook driving a black Mercedes sedan who appear to be targeting SUVs in the Beverly and Morgan Park neighborhoods, Chicago 22nd District police said in a community alert.

On August 26, numerous catalytic converters were reported stolen in the 9900 to 11700 blocks of South Campbell and Washtenaw streets.

Police said that most of the targeted vehicles appeared to be small to mid-sized SUVs. The thefts occurred between midnight and 5:30 p.m.

Catalytic converters are coveted for their copper. After cutting them off of cars, usually causing damage to the vehicle, they can be taken to junk yards and cashed in for several hundred dollars.

According to police, victims and witnesses reported observing two African American males dressed in hooded sweatshirts committing these thefts. The men were driving a black Mercedes sedan with Illinois dealer plates.

Thieves use a handheld power saw, so look outside if you hear any cutting tools in the early morning hours, and notify police if suspicious activity exists.

Call 911 immediately and provide a detailed description of any suspicious people including any vehicle description and license plate information.
