Caught Napping? Video Shows Chicago Cop Sleeping in His Police SUV

The video, recorded at 63rd and South Campbell on the South Side, was posted to Facebook last week. Mayor addresses the matter.

A Chicago cop’s on-duty nap, caught on video, has been viewed almost 1 million times on Facebook. And now the police department is investigating the case of the sleepy crimefighter.

“The incident is not in keeping with the high expectations placed on officers,” the department said in a statement.

The video, posted to Facebook on May 15, shows an officer in the front seat of a CPD SUV at the corner of 63rd Street and South Campbell Avenue on Chicago’s South Side. The man who recorded the video, identified as Julian Collins on his Facebook page, walks right up to the open passenger window as he narrates.

“I had to get my point across,” he says, explaining why he got so close.

By late Wednesday evening, after the video was posted to several news outlets, including CBS Chicago, DNAinfo Chicago, NBC Chicago and the Chicago Sun-Times websites as well as their Facebook pages, the creator of the video removed it from Facebook.

“The video, I think, is there for all to see and make a judgment,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel told reporters on Wednesday after the video went viral. “You have to look at what the men and women in uniform throughout the city do all day.

“There are a lot of videos of officers, and a lot of them do exactly what you’d want them to do, both on duty and off duty, consistent with the responsibilities of being a police officer, which means we put a lot of trust in you.”
