Community Gives Special Olympian Proper Sendoff

Dozens gathered at Mt. Greenwood Park on a cold morning to wish the best for Tommy Shimoda, who seeks a Gold Medal in speed skating

CHICAGO, IL - Dozens of people gathered at Mount Greenwood Park on Saturday to give Tommy Shimoda a proper sendoff before he left the area to compete in the Special Olympics World Games this week in Austria.

A representative from the Chicago Park District, Shimoda's family members and Ald. Matt O'Shea all spoke to a group who braved cold temperatures to cheer on Shimoda as he seeks a Gold Medal in the speed skating event.

Shimoda, a 2014 alum of the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, has been a part of the Special Olympics Chicago program at the park since he was eight years old. He will be the only athlete from the city of Chicago to compete for Team USA at the Special Olympics, which began on Tuesday.
