Some current and former officers think it’s sending a bad message to the public at a time when the Chicago Police Department is trying to rebuild community trust after several high profile shootings.
The FOP came to Van Dyke’s aide, who is married and the father of two children, by starting a bond fund after he was held without bail for several days following his arrest last November.

The union also put out a call for off-duty police officers to provide security when Van Dyke was released from jail after posting $150,000 bond.
Now, the officer says he can’t find a job while he is suspended without pay, leaving his family in dire financial straits.
