CPD Honor Guard Begins 24-Hour Vigil at Police Memorial

Chicago Police Department honor guard vigil now underway at Gold Star Families Memorial Park.

CHICAGO, IL -- The 24-hour vigil at the CPD Gold Star Families Memorial is now underway and will conclude at midnight Friday.

A Chicago Police Department honor guard detail will be stationed in front of the water wall, rain or shine, at the park east of Soldier Field near 18th Street and Waldron Drive.

Five-hundred seventy-four gold star flags were placed in the park honoring the Chicago police officers who died in the line of duty.

Each year, officers volunteer to maintain a 24-hour at the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park marking the beginning of Police Memorial Month in May.

Five-hundred seventy-four gold star flags were placed in the park honoring the 574 Chicago police officers who died in the line of duty over the past 163 years, according to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.

Honor guard members will assist anyone who wishes to place a wreath in front of the memorial fountain anytime during the vigil.

The vigil will conclude with the playing of taps at 11:59 p.m. Thursday.
