CPS Students Go Back to School Sept. 8

There is no easing back into the school year at Chicago Public Schools with half days or special orientations.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 8, the day after Labor Day, all city public schools will kick off the new school year with a full day.

In honor of the first day of school, the CTA will be offering FREE rides on buses and trains for all Chicago Public School students and adults accompanying them to school.

CPS students must submit their completed health forms on the first day, with proof of vaccinations and physical examinations for students entering kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades, and transfer students, due on October 15.

Also, the state of Illinois now requires meningococcal disease (MCV4) for students entering the sixth and twelfth grades.

Patch has compiled key dates, times and other helpful information for neighborhood schools to help parents navigate those first weeks of school for public school students. Please note that some schools are starting on a staggered schedule, designed to save money on CPS bus transportation.

School hours: 8 a.m. -3 p.m.

Extended care 3-5 p.m.

School hours: 7:45 a.m.-2:45 p.m.

Earliest dropoff: 7:20 a.m. (breakfast)

School hours: 7:30 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.

Elizabeth H. Sutherland Elementary School

School hours: 8am-3pm

Earliest dropoff: 7:50am
