Extra Alarm Fire Heavily Damages South Side Church

An extra alarm fire tore through a South Side church early Wednesday morning.

More than 150 Chicago firefighters battled the blaze at Shrine of Christ the King Church, near east 64th Street and South Woodlawn in the city’s Woodlawn neighborhood.

The first call came in around 5:45 a.m. Firefighters had to battle the fire from outside and tried to douse the roof of the church.

The fire was finally struck around 9 a.m., when the church’s roof caved in, Chicago Fire Media reported on Twitter.

There were no injuries. The fire does not appear to be suspicious and the cause is being investigated.
