Firefighter Falls Down Elevator Shaft Battling West Side Blaze

One man was killed in the fire and a second firefighter suffered minor injuries.

CHICAGO, IL - One man was killed and two firefighters injured on a fire on the city's West Side on Friday. Firefighters responded to the apartment blaze just after 10 p.m. in the Austin neighborhood that displaced 30 people.

The fire in the 300 block of N. Central Avenue was put out by around 10:45 p.m., Chicago Fire Department Media Affairs Chief Juan Hernandez told the Chicago Sun Times. A firefighter who fell down an elevator shaft was taken to the hospital in serious-to-critical condition. Another firefighter was transported for minor injuries.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
