IHSA Suspends Mount Carmel Coach 2 Practices, Puts Football Program On Probation

CHICAGO—The Illinois High School Sports Association has suspended the Mount Carmel High School head football coach after a picture circulated online showing the team practicing with full pads in violation of the rules. The Mount Carmel Caravan football team has also been placed on probation for the 2026-2027 season, the Chicago Tribune reported.

An incriminating picture posted on X, since deleted, showed players practicing in helmets and full pads earlier this month. Sportswriter Jacob Elsey shared the photo from the deleted tweet on BroBible.

Head coach Jordan Lynch, a 2009 Mount Carmel graduate and star quarterback who went on to become a Heisman Trophy finalist for Northern Illinois University, was suspended for two practices.

The IHSA banned full pads in summer practice in 2014 to reduce the number of injuries by eliminating full contact during summer practice. Players would be able to practice in full pads once classes begin.

The Chicago Catholic boys high school has won four straight state championships, going 14-0 in the 2025 season. Lynch has tallied an 89-12 win-loss record over twelve seasons. Mount Carmel is a favorite to win the Class 8A championship this season.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Mount Carmel self-reported to the IHSA with suggested sanctions, which were accepted.

Lynch’s suspension is not expected to impact his status for the Caravan’s season opener against East St. Louis on Aug. 22 at Hancock Stadium in Normal.
