Liquor License Moratorium Lift Temporary

A liquor store on the west side of Western Avenue changing owners is the cause for an ordinance regarding alcohol sales.

CHICAGO - A Committee on License and Consumer Protection meeting Thursday morning was called to help a local business change owners while following regulations.

19th Ward Ald. Matt O'Shea has sponsored an ordinance that would "allow additional package goods licenses " between 105th and 107th streets. Marty Joyce, O'Shea's chief of staff, said this is related to a moratorium in place banning the issuance of liquor licenses on both sides of the street.

The lift of the moratorium being put into place temporarily as Morand's Liquors has plans to change owners and would need a new liquor license to be issued, Joyce said.

There are no current plans to allow a liquor license on the east side of the street. Joyce said that since O'Shea was elected alderman there have been two liquor licenses issued on the east side of Western: one at Smith Village and the other at the Barraco's Cafe on 95th Street.

First brought to the City Council on Oct. 31, the current ordinance was referred to the Committee on License and Consumer Protection. A committee meeting to discuss the issue is planned for 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8.
