Marist Promotes Teacher and Coach to Academic Dean

Tom Gouterman, a six-year teacher and coach, is the new academic dean of upperclassmen at Marist High School.

Marist High School has tapped a teacher and coach to fill the role of academic dean of upperclassmen starting with the 2017-18 school year. Tom Gouterman has worked at Marist for six years, serving as a science instructor, coordinating academic mentoring, and summer school principal. He has also coached in the school’s wrestling and track programs.

“Tom brings a great energy to the role and has established strong relationships with teachers and students,” Marist Principal Larry Tucker ‘79 said in a news release.

Gouterman received his bachelor degree in chemistry from Kalamazoo College in Michigan and a master’s in education in teaching and special education from National Louis University. Before coming to Marist he taught for Chicago Public Schools.

“Working with the majority of the Marist student body as a teacher and academic mentor brought me great joy and fulfillment,” Gouterman said. “I look forward to continuing my role as an academic mentor for our students and to support our faculty in providing the best education possible.”

The academic dean oversees course scheduling, grade reporting, and provides leadership in the areas of curriculum and instruction. The dean works closely with the administrative team, department chairs, and guidance department to ensure student success.
