The two were fighting over money at their home in the 11300 block of S. Green Street, when the younger Finney’s girlfriend said she heard a single gunshot, and James Finney say, “I just popped your ass,” according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Another friend who had been standing outside waiting for a pizza delivery came back inside to see James Finney standing over his brother, Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Barry Quinn said in court Monday.

David Finney was shot in the chest and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later died. James Finney fled the scene but was found by police 15 minutes later.
He later recorded a statement to police confessing he had killed his brother, Quinn said. It was not the pair’s first domestic incident, as James Finney was charged in 2013 with beating his younger brother. The case was squashed when David did not appear at the court date.
In 2014, James was sentenced to 30 days in jail for a misdemeanor battery conviction.
On Monday, James Finney was ordered held on $1 million bond.
