Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School senior, Elizabeth Evans (Morgan Park), has been named a Chick Evans Scholar. The Chick Evans Scholarship is funded through the Evans Scholars Foundation (ESF) and provides four-year tuition and housing to students attending one of 17 universities throughout the country, 14 of which boast a Scholarship House.

To be eligible to receive the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, students have to meet a multitude of criteria, including high academic standing, an impeccable caddie record for two or more years, a strong character, and demonstrated financial need. The application process begins in August, when the students are first permitted to fill out the application. Once those are received, each applicant is sent a financial aid profile to complete. If the student advances, they are invited to a selection meeting, where they are interviewed by committees comprised of ESF officials, alumni and other program supporters. These meetings are held from December through March, and each finalist is notified of their decision within one week.

Elizabeth, who caddies at Beverly Country Club, was one of 12 students in the first round of interviews, and therefore one of the first students to receive the honor. The committee shared with her that they were impressed with her resume and that her application really stood out to the committee.

“The interview process was intimidating,” Elizabeth shared. There were more than 100 committee members in the room. Parts of her essay had been read aloud before she entered, and any member of the audience was allowed to ask her questions. Liz emphasized her involvement in theatre and Varsity Club at McAuley to highlight her work ethic, and was asked about the all-girls atmosphere McAuley provides.

“I responded that I like the all-girls atmosphere,” Elizabeth said. “Normally, you’re with three other caddies who are all boys, and four men golfers, so the confidence gained from the all-girl atmosphere really hits home when I’m working.”

Once the interview is complete, the audience votes on whether or not they should award the scholarship to the interviewee. Liz was awarded the scholarship to Indiana University, where she hopes to study International Relations, with the aim to work in the Foreign Service for the UN, or for the State’s Department. While at McAuley, Liz has been active member of Model UN, Student Ambassadors, the National English Honor Society, the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society.
