Mother McAuley Student Receives Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship

The Chick Evans Scholarship Foundation offers the nation's largest scholarship program for caddies.

MT. GREENWOOD, IL - The nation's largest scholarship program for caddies recently selected an ambitious, talented Mother McAuley senior as one of its Chick Evans scholars. Kathryn Alvarez was recently awarded the scholarship, which is sponsored by the Western Golf Association. The average value of a Chick Evans scholarship is $100,000.

Alvarez is very active in school and her studies, according to school officials. She is a caddie at Ridge Country Club and is enrolled in honors and AP classes, and participates in the National Honors Society, Science National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society. She also is a member of the McAuley golf team, science club and is an active youth ministry leader at Saint Christina parish. She is a graduate of Saint John Fisher grade school.

According to school officials, Alvarez is currently undecided in her college selection. However, she is considering the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (where her brother currently is an Evans scholar), Indiana University or Marquette University.

Since 1930, the Chick Evans Foundation has awarded nearly 11,000 scholarships for full tuition and housing college scholarships to hardworking caddies with limited financial means. The program provides academic, professional and social resources that help students maintain a cumulative 3.3 GPA and 95 percent graduation rate. The Foundation is named in honor of amateur golfer Charles "Chick" Evans Jr. Evans was the first amateur to win the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur in one year.
