Newly Released Video Shows Moments Before Horrific Crash That Killed Nuns
Oak Lawn police release surveillance video of fatal crash at 95th Street and Cicero Avenue from Oct. 5.

In the wake of the release of the 911 calls from the crash at 95th Street and Cicero Avenue, Oak Lawn police have released surveillance video of the crash that killed two nuns and injured 23 people.
Airing for the first time on WGN-TV, the video shows the Ford F150 truck driven by 81-year-old Edward Carthans careening westbound, violently sideswiping a car in front of the Target in the 4100 block of 95th St. seconds before reaching the intersection.
As cars line up at the traffic signal in the eastbound lanes, Carthans’ truck continues its high speed trajectory toward the intersection, barely missing a motorcyclist. By then, the Ford pickup is already in the wrong line when it goes through a red light and plows into the sisters’ car at approximately 4:27 p.m. Oct. 5.

Sr. Jean Stickney, 81, and Sr. Kab Kyoung Cab, 48, known to her American friends as “Sr. Anna” belonged to the Little Company of Mary religious order and were actively involved in the hospital of the same name.
A third sister riding in the nuns’ car survived the impact and continues to recover from her injuries. The sisters were returning home from a Sunday afternoon of shopping.
Carthans also died in the crash. Moments before the bizarre 11-car pile-up, a motorist reported a driver slumped behind the wheel of a large pick-up truck at 95th Street and Western Avenue in Evergreen Park.
The cause of the bizarre accident is still unknown. Toxicology and emissions testing are pending to determine if Carthans was under the influence or overcome by carbon monoxide emissions.
