Saint Xavier University Hosted 170th Founders’ Day Celebration

SXU commemorated its 170 years of Catholic and Mercy education.

Last week, over 175 students, faculty, staff, Sisters of Mercy, and community members gathered together to commemorate Saint Xavier University’s (SXU) 170th Founders’ Day on Thursday, Dec. 1. The event was filled with songs, prayers, and historical recounts of SXU’s founding Sisters of Mercy, who made SXU the first Catholic institution for higher learning in Chicago. The keynote address and blessing were offered by the President of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Sr. Patricia McDermott, RSM, followed by a historical reflection of SXU by President Christine Wiseman. The event concluded with a reception in SXU’s Butler Reception Room, where guests shared stories and memories of how SXU’s history and Core Values have impacted their lives personally.
