Traveling With Loved Ones With Memory Loss Focus Of Smith Village Caregiver Support Group

The Smith Village Caregiver Support Group will address involving loved ones with memory loss in family vacation plans, Tuesday, July 21.

CHICAGO—The lazy days of summer can be a perfect time for a relaxing getaway, but last-minute plans involving people living with dementia can present unique challenges. In addition to typical tasks such as making reservations for travel and lodging, a little planning can go a long way toward an enjoyable and restful experience.

Summer travel tips will be the main focus during the next meeting of the Smith Village Caregiver Support Group meeting, set for 6:30 pm, Tuesday, July 21, at 2320 West 113th Place , Chicago.

“Probably the first thing caregivers must do is assess what challenges will face their loved one when going to new places and dealing with new people and even crowds,” says Alice Keane. “New environments can trigger extreme behavioral changes. So careful planning is important, especially if the loved one has a habit of wandering.”

Keane underscores the basic needs that caregivers should anticipate to ensure an enjoyable and stress-free vacation.

“Allow plenty of time for rest. Minimize changes to your loved one’s routine. Travel during the time of day that’s best for them. Carry any supplies you think you may need,” Keane added. “The goal is to make summer travel easier not only for those living with dementia but also for their caregivers.”
