SXU's Anna Goldman named Lincoln Academy Student Laureate

Student Laureates are honored for their leadership and service in the pursuit of the betterment of humanity.

Each fall, an outstanding senior from each of the four-year degree-granting institutions of higher learning in Illinois is awarded the Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award and thereby becomes a Student Laureate of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. This year, Anna Goldman was selected as Saint Xavier University’s (SXU) Student Laureate.

In the spirit of Lincoln, Student Laureates are honored for their leadership and service in the pursuit of the betterment of humanity and for overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities. The 41st Annual Student Laureate Award Ceremony was held on Saturday, Nov. 7 in the Hall of Representatives at the Old State Capitol in Springfield. Governor Bruce Rauner, president of the Academy, was invited to present the awards. Each Student Laureate was presented the following in recognition of outstanding achievement: The Lincoln Academy Student Laureate Medallion; a certificate of achievement; and the Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award in the amount of $1,000.

Goldman is a psychology major with a 3.28 GPA. She is the executive vice president for Saint Xavier Council, founder and president of the Feminist Club, and a member of the Diversity Council and Psychology Club. Goldman was instrumental in the success of “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” an event held in the spring of 2015 to raise awareness of violence against women. She also helped organize and run other events last year including a diversity awareness program, Latin film series, Chinese New Year and Taste of SXU. During the summer, Goldman also helped coach a Special Olympics softball team. This year, she has volunteered with the Barbara Vick Early Childhood Center; the Bread Truck, serving food to those in need in Chicago; and SXU’s Anxiety Screening Day.

“Campus and civic engagement are important to me and I’ve found such a supportive environment for that here [SXU] from staff, faculty and administration,” said Goldman. “I’m so grateful to be among such talented and thoughtful SXU students who are motivated to always make better, stronger and more inclusive efforts for our campus and community.”
