SXU's Student Veteran Alliance Recognized by Student Veterans of America

SXU's Student Veteran Alliance was named July Chapter of the Month

Saint Xavier University’s (SXU) Student Veteran Alliance was recently named the July Chapter of the Month by Student Veterans of America (SVA). SXU was recognized for their reputation of accommodating current and retired service members through campus resources such as their Yellow Ribbon Program and Student Veteran Resource Center (SVRC), which opened in August 2014.

During the 2014-2015 academic year, SXU’s Student Veteran Alliance participated in several events and initiatives, such as a week-long slate of events to commemorate Veterans Day. They also attended the 2015 SVA National Conference, volunteered with SVA-Illinois and helped out with the Marine Reserve Toys for Tots program. The Student Veteran Alliance also supported the Walk-A-Mile-In-Her-Shoes event to raise awareness about the effects of violence against women.

SXU believes veteran students are a valuable group that adds to the richness of the school. Through the SVRC, current and retired service members can seek out individualized advising and support. The space serves as a gateway for SXU veterans to meet and offer help with the transition from military to civilian life.

“They are not here because it’s the next stop after high school,” said Sheri Gross, compliance advisor for veterans and athletes at SXU. “They’re here because they want to be here and further their education. Most of my students are really good at leading a group. They know what they want to do. They bring honor, they bring loyalty, they bring integrity. The university is richer for them.”

All interested service members seeking a higher education degree in a vet-friendly environment should apply to SXU. For more information on the resources available to veterans, please visit the SXU website.
