White Man Gave CPR to Joshua Beal After Fatal Police Shooting

Video shows man attempting to revive Joshua Beal moments after the fatal shooting in Mount Greenwood on Nov. 5.

CHICAGO, IL - In the aftermath of the shooting of Joshua Beal by an off-duty Chicago police officer in Mount Greenwood, a man was shown on video administering CPR.

One of three videos of the incident released Wednesday by the city of Chicago’s Independent Police Review Authority showed the white man, who was wearing a black shirt and blue jeans at the time, attempt to revive Beal moments after he was shot by the officer in what bystanders have called a “race war.”

A confrontation on 111th St. on Nov. 5, 2016 that started when a vehicle involved in a funeral procession was blocking a fire lane escalated into a fight between funeral goers and at least one off-duty police officer. The officer fired several shots at Beal, killing him, after Beal allegedly pointed a gun.

Two of the videos shared by IPRA were taken while the shooting was happening, but neither captured the moment of impact and both were unclear. The video showing the man administer CPR to Beal as he was lying on the north side of 111th Street near Troy Avenue was the clearest of the three, but it only included the moments after the shooting.

Dozens of 911 calls from witnesses and bystanders of the incident were also shared this week.
