Workout Tips From Treadfit Owner Jenny Harkins

Fitness professional Jenny Harkins shares three tips for staying motivated throughout 2018.

CHICAGO, IL - If you're still up to date on your New Year's resolution to get fit, then congratulations. You've made it longer than many who vow that 2018 will be the year to get and stay in shape.

And since things are getting pretty serious now 22 days into that resolution, it might be a good time to take advantage of an offer a local gym has had in place since January began. Treadfit, at 10458 S. Western Ave. in Beverly, is running a special that gives those who sign up for 20 workout classes before the end of the month $40 off.

If you are still keeping up with your resolution, but feel a bit of motivation loss now three weeks into the new year, Treadfit Owner Jenny Harkins may be able to help you with a series of tips she shared with Beverly-Mt. Greenwood Patch.

"It is very important to maintain motivation and enthusiasm when beginning or returning to a workout routine," she said, offering these suggestions:

  • Pick an attainable goal and create a realistic plan to achieve that goal. Often times, clients pick goals that are not realistic and quickly become overwhelmed and discouraged. Once you have created a plan, stick to it. Registering for three classes per week is a great starting point and will yield big results. As clients progress they can bump it to four classes per week.
  • Purchase something new such as shoes, a great running top, a runner’s watch, etc. By adding in something new, enthusiasm stays high and clients are excited for their next workout.
  • Have a friend or partner to attend classes with. Knowing you have someone waiting for you at the gym, encourages you to show up!

The offer Harkins has available to those who sign up in January is for 20 50-minute classes for $200. Regular prices for classes at the expanding Beverly gym are $240 for 20, $195 for 15, $140 for 10, $75 for five and $16 for a single class.

Treadfit first opened in Beverly three years ago and has since upgraded to a larger space they now operate out of at 105th and Western. Harkins has plans to open a second location, this one in the western suburbs, in a matter of weeks.

Workouts at Treadfit are intense, 50-minute sessions that include a mix of treadmill work and full-body strength training.

On the treadmill, an experienced and certified instructor will guide a group of no more than 15 to move up and down certain intervals from their "easy pace." The treadmills can accommodate anyone from walkers to avid marathon runners. Participants in the workouts will also move quickly from station to station in the strength training portion.

Harkins said Treadfit runs six two-week boot camps several times throughout the year.

"These are a great kick starts to any workout routine," she said.

The gym's biggest competition of the year is starting soon as well. On March 1, Treadfit's "March Madness" challenge will begin with teams of four competing throughout the month for most points earned.
