Joslyn was ejected from her mother’s car. Yesenia and Isaac were both pronounced dead at the scene. Illinois State Troopers are still marveling that she survived the violent crash, the family’s GoFundMe page stated.

The little girl was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where she received the first of two major life-saving surgeries for head trauma and to repair a broken leg.

“Today our strong little fighter has pulled through her two surgeries and has her doctors quite impressed with how she is recovering. She is still in a lot of pain but her doctors, nurses and family members are doing everything they can to keep her comfortable.”

To help pay for Yesenia and Isaac’s funeral costs, Joslyn’s ongoing medical care and the family’s legal fees, supporters started a GoFundMe campaign that has raised $25,575 since Sunday evening.

Coming to the family’s aid is the Seton Montessori Institute and School in Clarendon Hills, where Joslyn and Isaac’s grandmother, Hilda Manzanares, has been a valued teacher’s assistant for over 30 years. Alumni of the school, as well as teachers from around the world who trained at the institute, are offering support for the family.

The family has strong ties to the school. Danny Manzanares, Yesenia’s husband and the children’s father, as well as his three siblings, attended the school as children. Joslyn was also a student there. Yesenia worked five years as a classroom assistant at Seton in the infant-toddler and early childhood programs up until her pregnancy with Isaac.

“They are a humble, hardworking family and they have a lot of healing ahead of them,” said Anna Perry, executive director of Seton. “It’s just so senseless and sad. The Quintero-Manzanares family has been part of Seton for three generations.”

A private funeral for the young mother and son are planned for this weekend in Joliet.

Georgianna Monnier recalled the year she and Yesenia worked together at Seton in an online tribute:

“I feel so honored to have worked closely with Yesenia for her last year at Seton, and to have had the opportunity to know her … Yesse fretted so much over how best to serve her family’s needs. I was so impressed that such a young woman felt so driven to get everything right for her family. Her sweet voice talking and her adorable figure walking through the school and patiently approaching children and adults respectfully and enthusiastically, always with her stunning smile, is a gift I am so grateful to hold onto…”
