Southbound Lanes Reopen After Motorcycle Crash On I-55

The motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries after police say the driver tried to pass traffic in a construction zone near Rt. 53.

BOLINGBROOK, IL — A motorcyclist was seriously injured and southbound lanes of Interstate 55 were closed for nearly an hour on Tuesday afternoon after the motorcycle struck a traffic cone and lost control, according to Illinois State Police.

The crash took place on I-55 at Route 53 at 2:49 p.m. near Bolingbrook, when police said that they were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash. A preliminary investigation showed that the motorcyclist attempted to pass traffic in a construction zone, hit a traffic cone, and lost control of the bike, police said.

The bike came to a stop in the left lane, police said. The driver of the motorcycle was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Traffic was being diverted off I-55 southbound onto IL-53, police said, while troopers completed their investigation. A state police spokesperson said that all lanes of traffic reopened at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
