Six Students Headed to Valley View Spelling Bee

Both Lukancic and Brooks middle schools crowned their spelling champsTuesday with winners now headed to the Valley View School District 365U Spelling Bee at Humphrey Middle School Feb. 3

Lukancic will send 6th grader Joey Jones, 7th grader Arta Osmani, and 8thgrader Jayla Campbell. Osmani was the overall Lukancic winner thus qualifying her for the Will County Spelling Bee as well.

The overall champion at Brooks was 7th grader Simran Sanghera, while 6thgrader Japinanit Singh was second overall. Both qualify for the VVSD Spelling Bee. Fiza Syed will be the 8th grade representative after coming in fourth behind 7thgrader Kiaraa Carhanas.

At Lukancic, Osmani edged fellow 7th graders Eleanor Zahorick and Celeste Hughes in a spell-off Wednesday morning to win the school title and earn the birth at the County Bee. Osmani spelled “peasant” correctly in the 22nd round. Among other words she spelled correctly were ballad, jostle, coupon, vehicular, magician, visual, appreciate, portrait, edification, irrigation, paunch and havoc.

Campbell won the 8th grade title by spelling “meager” correctly in round seven and “gambol” correctly in round 9. Jones took the 6th grade crown by spelling valley and dandelion properly.

At Brooks, Sanghera spelled “milieu” correctly in the 13th round for the win after spelling guffaw, fluctuation, seethe, dilapidated, Machiavellian, epee, arrogant, boorish, adumbrate, ukulele, binoculars, and maize. Singh finished second by being correct on slalom, cabal, abominably, iota, verve, notoriety, yankee, slovenly, ancillary, epoch, genuine, and grandeur.

The highest finishing Brooks student at the VVSD Spelling Bee will represent the school at the Will County Spelling Bee.
