2 Men Charged With Attempted Murder in Shootout With Off-Duty Chicago Cop

The accused shooter was wounded in the head during the exchange of gunfire with a CPD sergeant Sunday night on the North Side.

CHICAGO, IL — Two men face attempted murder charges stemming from a weekend shootout on the North Side with an off-duty Chicago cop, acording to police.

Fernando Brieto-Solano, 22, and Juan Ramirez, 26 — both reported to live in the 2700 block of North Major Avenue — were each charged with a single count of attempted murder in the incident Sunday night in the Albany Park neighborhood. Ramirez also was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Bail hearings for both men are set for Tuesday.

Brieto-Solano is accused of opening fire on an off-duty Chicago police sergeant and two other men while riding in a vehicle at around 7:23 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, in the 4500 block of North Kedzie Avenue, police said. The off-duty officer returned fire, and Brieto-Solano was wounded in the head during the exchange.

The injured suspect arrived a short while later at Swedish Covenant Hospital, where he was identified as being one of the participants in the earlier gunplay, according to police. Ramirez also was identified as being one of the people in the vehicle, as well as being accused of hiding the weapon allegedly used by Brieto-Solano on hospital grounds after the incident, police added.

The off-duty sergeant and his companions — 43 and 45 years old — were not hurt in the shootout. The shooting currently is being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.

Sunday night's incident was the second police-involved shooting of the weekend. Early Sunday morning, a 34-year-old man was fatally shot by police in the 3400 block of West Madison Street after a report of a shooting that wounded three other people.
