Off-Duty Chicago Cop in Shootout That Wounds Man in Head

The incident Sunday night was the 2nd police-involved shooting of the weekend.

CHICAGO, IL — A man was shot and wounded in the head during a shootout with an off-duty Chicago police sergeant Sunday night on the North Side, police said.

At about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, the officer and several other people were walking in the 4500 block of North Kedzie Avenue in the Albany Park neighborhood when individuals in a dark vehicle pulled up, according to Chicago police. A verbal confrontation started between the two groups.

The vehicle pulled away, driving into a parking lot in order to double back toward the sergeant's group. One of the vehicle's passengers then allegedly began shooting at the police officer and his friends.

The officer returned fire, and the vehicle sped off, police said. The sergeant and his friends were not hurt in the exchange.

Later, police received a report of a man with a gunshot wound to the head taking himself to Swedish Covenant Hospital. A search of the scene and an investigation discovered a weapon and confirmed the injured man was involved in the earlier shootout, according to police.

Police did not give more details about the injured man and did not say if the man was taken into custody or charged. The shooting currently is being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.

Sunday night's incident was the second police-involved shooting of the weekend. Early Sunday morning, a 34-year-old man was fatally shot by police in the 3400 block of West Madison Street after a report of a shooting that wounded three other people.
