Holy Trinity Falls to Public League Foe Robeson 69-65
2nd Half Rally Falls short on Alumni Night!
Chicago Public League foe Robeson visited THE JUNGLE Friday Jan. 22nd and played the Tigers in front of a supportive fan base that included returning HT alums.
As for the contest, the Raiders opened with a 19-14 first quarter lead and this combined with Holy Trinity’s poor free throw shooting
-- the Tigers made but 19 of 34 charity throws on the night -- spelled disaster games’ end.
Actually if one takes away those two factors from the games equation, the Tigers were right in the battle as the point totals for the 2nd thru 4th quarters were but one point apart in favor of the home team.
In fact, coming down to the final minutes of the game, HT (11-6 overall; two straight losses) had tied the game twice with only minutes to play.
With 1:42 left, senior Adrian Santiago (9 points on the evening) made a jumper in the paint and was fouled. He proceeded to hit the free throw and the score was knotted at 60-all.
Then with 1:02 remaining, senior Marlon Caston (8 points) hit both ends of a double-bonus free throw situation, and again the game was deadlocked
this time at 64-all.
However, that is as close as HT would get as the Rainders’ Malik McToy hit one of 2 free throws with just 46 seconds to play to move Robeson to a
2-point margin at 66-64. And with the Tigers stuck in the position of fouling to stop the clock, Robeson’s Levy Duplush made the 2nd of a double bonus and Donald McGray made 2 more charity throws to put the game out of reach.
Robeson (12-9 overall) featured Hillel Watkins with 22 points and teammate McCray who added 17. McToy & Duplush were also in double figures for the Raiders with 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Tigers were led by Justin Robinson who had 22 points prior to fouling out in the fourth quarter and teammate Christian Camarillo who added 16
including four treys on the evening. Teammate Michael Rodriguez sparked the Tigers rally draining two treys mid-way in the final stanza.
The Tigers will now regroup and prepare for two important Chicago Prep league contests coming up next week.
Wednesday, Jan. 27 they host Ida Crown at 6pm/7:30pm. And the next evening they play Rochelle Zell Jewish high (5:30pm/7pm) on the road in Deerfield.
Both of these opponents are part of the Chicago Prep Red division.
