Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center Earns an ‘A’ in Patient Safety

Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (PSMEMC) received an “A” for how well the medical center protects patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections, according to The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog.

This is the second consecutive “A” in patient safety for PSMEMC. The latest Hospital Safety Score from The Leapfrog Group is compiled under the guidance of a national panel of leading experts on patient safety.

The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.

“Safety is a top priority at our medical center. Our staff works closely with our physicians to ensure the safety of every patient who comes through our doors,” said Martin Judd, regional CEO, PSMEMC. “We are pleased to earn another ‘A’ rating – which demonstrates how focused and committed our entire team is to providing care in a safe setting.”

Calculated under criteria identified by Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D or F score. The score represents a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in spring 2014, with about 32 percent receiving an “A” grade.
