BUFFALO GROVE, IL — The driver involved in an April crash that killed Buffalo Grove High School security guard Orlando Rivas has been cited for three traffic offenses following a months-long investigation, police announced.
Alisa Chykanivska, of Elmwood Park, was issued citations for failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash, failing to exercise due care and driving on a sidewalk, according to the Buffalo Grove Police Department.
Chykanivska was scheduled to appear Thursday at the Cook County Third Municipal District courthouse in Rolling Meadows.
The citations follow an investigation by Buffalo Grove police with assistance from the Major Crash Assistance Team and the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.
The traffic allegations are accusations. Chykanivska is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The crash occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. April 21, as a vehicle was leaving the Buffalo Grove High School parking lot and attempting to enter Dundee Road during afternoon dismissal.
The vehicle left the roadway and struck a pole, which then struck Rivas as he helped students cross the street, police previously said. Officers who were already nearby immediately provided medical assistance.
Rivas, 52, of Buffalo Grove, sustained a traumatic brain injury and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition. He died April 24, three days after the crash.
A fundraiser organized for his family said Rivas was injured while shielding students from harm.
Police previously said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Rivas worked as a security guard at Buffalo Grove High School and was remembered by village and school officials for his dedication to students.
"Orlando Rivas represented the very best of our community," Police Chief Brian Budds said after Rivas' death. "His dedication to the safety and well-being of students and staff was evident every day, and his final act speaks volumes about his character."

Buffalo Grove High School Principal Jeff Wardle described Rivas as a familiar and trusted presence who made students, families and visitors feel safe and welcome.
"His life was defined by service to others and a continued commitment to supporting and guiding young people," Wardle said. "Life without him will be less bright."
Rivas left behind his wife, Erin, and four children.
Students, staff members and residents gathered for a vigil following Rivas' death.
Buffalo Grove High School, Township High School District 214 and community partners also held "A Night Remembering Orlando Rivas" on July 21 at Finn McCool's Irish Sports Pub in Wheeling.
