'Heroic' Security Guard Dies From Injuries Sustained In Buffalo Grove High Crash: Police

Orlando Rivas, 52, of Buffalo Grove, was critically injured Tuesday when a vehicle struck a pole that then struck him.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — A staff member at Buffalo Grove High School, who was critically injured earlier this week following a crash on campus, has died. Orlando Rivas, 52, of Buffalo Grove, was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital after the incident, and died Friday, according to the Buffalo Grove Police Department.

Police said officers responded at about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, to a crash that began on school grounds as a vehicle was attempting to exit the parking lot onto Dundee Road during school dismissal. During the incident, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a pole, which then struck Rivas.

According to a GoFundMe set up for his family, Rivas sustained a traumatic brain injury while shielding students he was helping cross the street. As of Friday night, the campaign has raised over $121,000 of a $10,000 goal.

Rivas leaves behind his wife, Erin, and four children. Buffalo Grove High School and community members will be hosting a vigil for Rivas at 7 p.m. Saturday, on the turf field at the school.

The Village of Buffalo Grove said it is "deeply saddened" to share news of Rivas' death, who is being remembered not only for his work as a security guard, but also for the care and compassion he brought to the Buffalo Grove High School community each day. Support resources remain available through Buffalo Grove High School and the Buffalo Grove Police Department for students and staff as the community grieves.

"Orlando Rivas represented the very best of our community," Buffalo Grove Police Chief Brian Budds said. "His dedication to the safety and well-being of students and staff was evident every day, and his final act speaks volumes about his character. Our hearts are with his family, the students and staff of Buffalo Grove High School, and all those grieving this profound loss."

Officials said Rivas' actions in his final moments reflected "a deep commitment to protecting others," and said "his act of quiet heroism will not be forgotten." The village also extended condolences to his wife, Erin, their children, and others who knew him.

Principal Jeff Wardle also remembered Rivas' role at the school.

"Mr. Rivas quickly became a trusted and familiar presence at our school, known for making students, families, and visitors feel welcomed, valued, and safe," Wardle said. "His life was defined by service to others and a continued commitment to supporting and guiding young people. Life without him will be less bright."

The crash remains under investigation by the Buffalo Grove Police Department Traffic Unit with help from the Major Crash Assistance Team. According to the village, the driver has not been cited or arrested.
