'I've Heard That Somewhere Before' - Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band's 11th Annual Spring Concert

“I’ve Heard That Somewhere Before!” is the title and theme of The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band’s 11th annual Spring Concert, to be held at the Stevenson High School Performing Arts Center in Lincolnshire, Illinois, on Saturday, April 21st, at 7:00 pm.  The 70-member group, under the musical direction of Founding Conductor Howard Green, will present a collection of musical offerings that you’ve heard in other, sometimes surprising settings.

The first half of the concert will feature the “Hungarian Rhapsody #2” by Franz Liszt, “Also Sprach Zarathustra” by Richard Strauss, and “Dance of the Hours” from the opera “La Gioconda” by Amilcare Ponchielli.  We will also be playing selections from “Into the Woods”, the musical theater creation of Stephen Sondheim.  Our featured number for the first half will be the “Concerto in Eb Major” for Alto Saxophone by Alexander Glazunov.  Eric Goluszka, principal saxophonist for the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band, will be our soloist for this incredible musical event.

After intermission, the Buffalo Grove Jazz Band will feature a collection of jazz numbers that, again, you know you’ve heard somewhere before, but here in versions of tunes made famous by Buddy Rich and Maynard Ferguson.  The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band will then return to the stage, completing the concert with a wonderful performance of the classic “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff.

(By the way, in no particular order, the music you’ll be hearing has also been heard in the song “Music, Music, Music” by Weiss and Baum, countless Bugs Bunny and Loony Toon cartoons, the “Can-Can” as featured in almost every burlesque theater, Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”, Christina Aguilera's "Hurt", a parody by Alan Sherman (“Hello, Muddah, Hello Fadduh”), the movie “Fantasia” accompanied by dancing hippos and ostriches, the opening of most Ozzy Osbourne concerts, and performances by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra!)

Tickets for the concert are $12.00 at the door ($8.00 for seniors and students at all times).  Advance tickets for $10.00 are available from band members and at the Village Hall.  Please call             (847) 459-2525       for more information.
