Kenosha Shooting Suspect Awaits Trial In the Suburbs

VERNON HILLS, Ill. - In the wake of a deadly shooting in Kenosha, Wis. in which two men were killed and another wounded, the suspect has been remanded to a detention center in Vernon Hills.

Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, is the primary suspect in the double homicide that took place in Kenosha this past Tuesday, Aug. 25, claiming the lives of two men and injuring a third. Rittenhouse lives in Antioch, Ill., about twenty minutes south of Kenosha. The minor had journeyed to the Wisconsin border town in the aftermath of a police-involved shooting that paralyzed 29 year old Jacob Blake, causing widespread protests to break out against police brutality.

While the exact details of the shooting are still coming to fruition, amateur video footage shows the suspect pointing an AR-15 assault rifle at multiple individuals, including one of the two men that were later shot dead. Additional security camera footage appeared to show Rittenhouse, while carrying his rifle, walking past a number of police vehicles after the shootings, despite cries from multiple witnesses that he be apprehended.

It was reported that Rittenhouse left Kenosha soon after the shootings took place and returned to his home in Antioch. He was arrested the following day by the Antioch Police Department. CNN reported that Rittenhouse was charged with felony first-degree homicide, as well as misdemeanor possession of a dangerous weapon by a minor. In all, he has been charged with five felonies and two misdemeanors.

While awaiting extradition to Wisconsin for his trial, Rittenhouse is being detained at the Lake County Juvenile Justice Complex off Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills. This complex serves as the main juvenile detention center for those arrested for crimes in Lake County.

Rittenhouse was reportedly an avid supporter of police militarization and used to work as a Public Safety Cadet. Numerous social media accounts appear to show him shooting assault rifles and using various objects for target practice, as well as citing inflammatory rhetoric. In a speech on Monday night, President Donald Trump praised Rittenhouse and claimed that he appeared to be acting in self-defense.

Despite being a minor, Rittenhouse has been charged as an adult. Although the trial may not begin until tensions have settled, no official information on the date of the suspect's extradition is available at this time.
