In an effort to help restore local natural areas to their original prairie state, students and teacher Carol Bouvier have been collecting prairie plant seed that will be spread in areas previously cleared of an invasive tree species.
Bouvier and her environmental science students collected prairie seeds at Crabtree Nature Center in Barrington during a field trip this fall. Bouvier also introduced her students to a high school volunteer project sponsored by the Cook County Forest Preserve and took 14 volunteers to Busse Woods in northwestern Cook County to collect more prairie plant seed. With the help of these students, the hope is that the
forest preserves can return areas currently crowded with undesirable plants back to their original prairie state.
