Vernon Area Library 'Summer Camp' reading program surpasses goal
Program rallied readers and supporters to raise more than $2,100 for local charities through the Read for Good campaign
For 2020, Vernon Area Public Library conducted its summer reading program as an all-ages "camp" that patrons participated in at home. Over the course of ten weeks, June 1 through August 9, individuals and families were invited to earn a series of themed badges by taking offline adventures, attending online programs, trying online activities or, of course, reading -- the most popular way that people participated in Summer Camp.
The library tracked the time participants spent with a book, tallying those times toward a community goal of 500,000 minutes. If this "Read for Good" goal was met, a dozen supporters pledged to donate to one of three local charities: Lake County Covid Relief Fund, Stevenson: One Family, and Vernon Township Food Pantry.
When Summer Camp wrapped up in mid August, the library reported that the program had attracted 455 participants who earned 2,411 badges along the way. The reading time totaled 557,029 minutes, exceeding the Read for Good goal.
