Mixed Organic Waste Collection Program Returns In Buffalo Grove

Residents will be able to combine food scraps and landscape waste for pickup on regular collection days, starting in April.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — Residents will soon some help again with managing organic waste. The Village of Buffalo Grove has announced that mixed containers of organic food and landscape waste will be collected on regular pickup days, starting April 1.

Officials said this initiative aims to divert waste by recycling materials at local compost facilities. Acceptable organic items must be mixed with landscape waste to qualify for this collection service.

The program accepts a wide range of materials including produce food scraps and landscape waste. Residents may also include food-soiled paper and various food products in their containers.

Accepted items include meat, fish, poultry, and dairy products. Additionally, residents can include bread, pasta, rice, grains, and coffee grounds in the mix.

To ensure collection, residents must follow specific container guidelines. Mixed organic waste should be placed in a rigid container to be serviced by Waste Management drivers. Containers must be clearly marked to identify them for the collection crews.

Residents have two options to properly label their containers for the drivers. A special organics decal is available for pickup at Village Hall for those who prefer an official marker. Alternatively, residents can mark their containers with an X to signify the contents for the drivers.

The Village encourages residents to review the full list of accepted items before participating in the program.
