Whitman students honor veterans

Students at Whitman Elementary School in Wheeling honored those who have served our country in the military during a ceremony on Veterans Day. Veterans who live at Addolorata Villa and from around the community were honored.

Each grade level identified a special way to honor veterans during the celebration. Kindergarten students led attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance. First and second grade students each recited a poem, while third graders made signs representing each branch of the military and thanked veterans. Fourth grade students shared words that exemplify veterans and heroes and fifth graders sang America the Beautiful. Cadets from the Wheeling High School NJROTC (Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps) presented the colors during the ceremony.

“We appreciate the sacrifices our veterans have made to protect our country, and our students were glad to have an opportunity to honor our community’s heroes on Friday,” said Whitman Principal Patty Puetz.

Following Halloween, Whitman students also donated candy to Operation Gratitude to be sent to troops overseas. Organized by the Make A Difference Club, students collected and donated more than 200 pounds of treats.
