Hinsdale South Golf Teams Taking Shots at Success

The Hinsdale South boys golf team is battling for its first conference title since 2002 while the girls golf team scored a program-record 174 Sept. 19.

The boys golf team lost to Downers Grove South 152-157 Tuesday at Village Greens of Woodridge in a key showdown for first place in the regular-season West Suburban Conference Gold Division standings.

The Hornets’ Chris Kopp was medalist with a 2-under-par 34, including an eagle, followed by Mike Bronsteader (40), Jon Murtaugh, Matt Reschke and Dan Ormiston (41), David Basa and Mike Schulz (42), Zach Pielet (45), Eric Baumbach (46), Rob Ressa (47), Alex Karbon (49) and Mike Mangiatini (51).

The results left the Hornets, Mustangs and Addison Trail tied for first place in Gold dual results with 4-1 records.

Since the overall Gold title is a combination of results from duals and the Gold Meet, this year’s Gold Meet Tuesday (Sept. 27) at Willowcrest will essentially be winner take all. The Hornets have not won an outright conference title since 2002.

On Saturday, the Hornets (307) took second at the Naperville Central Quad at Naperbrook, beating Glenbrook South (322) and Naperville Central (325) while finishing behind Providence (303). In other Gold duals, the Hornets beat Willowbrook 141-172 Sept. 15 at Sugar Creek, Leyden 147-177 Sept. 13 at Village Greens and Morton 156-187 Sept. 8, both at Village Greens.

Against Willowbrook, Kopp shot a 1-under-par 31 against to finish first. Other key scores came from Karban (34), who had a hole in one the previous day in practice, Basa and Ormiston (38), Murtaugh and Reschke (39) and Baumbach (40).

Basa’s 1-under-par 35 earned medalist honors against Leyden, followed by Murtaugh (36 with 3 birdies), Kopp (37), Schulz (39) and Reschke (40). Kopp and Ormiston were medalists against Morton with 1-over-par 37s, followed by Schulz (40) and Murtaugh and Basa (42).

On Sept. 10, the Hornets were ninth (328) of 28 teams at the Providence Invite at The Sanctuary. Kopp tied for first place with a par-72 and two birdies but lost out on the individual title after shooting par on the playoff hole. Also competing for the Hornets were Basa (80), Reschke (83), Murtaugh (86) and Ormiston (87).
