The shelter hosted its second annual Kitten Shower on Saturday, April 18, 2015 in anticipation of kitten season in an effort to gather much-needed supplies.

More than 75 community residents and shelter supporters attended, offering much needed kitten supply donations. Among the donations were bags and cans of kitten/cat food, litter, cat treats and toys and numerous other supplies in addition to more than $500 in gift cards and cash donations. All of these items will assist with caring for the many litters of kittens that arrive at the shelter between April and October, which is kitten season

During the shower, guests took shelter tours, played with, and were photographed with the kittens. Children then received a photo button with their “kitten” photo as a memento from the day. Two additional attractions for children were the face painting table and a balloon artist making balloon animals. A raffle for a cat condo tower was also held. Cat decorated cupcakes and lemonade added to the festivities as attendees chatted with shelter staff and volunteers and visited all of the animals available for adoption in the kennel areas.

HHS is so thankful for the overwhelming support from everyone attending. Guests learned about the shelter’s work on behalf of homeless animals and about spaying and neutering cats in an effort to control overpopulation of kittens. Since the cat gestation period is 61 days, an unspayed female is likely to have three or more litters during kitten season. During this time, the influx of kittens at HHS is constant. The shelter is committed to caring for the kittens by providing nutritious food, water, medical attention, clean bedding and kennel environment, kitten/cat toys for stimulation and interaction, and socialization experiences until they are adopted. HHS invites anyone looking for a kitten to visit the shelter or its website to find a feline companion to adopt.
