Men and their Hair - it's Big Business for Hair Salons
Ross Bartolomei, owner of Salon Hype with locations in Burr Ridge and La Grange, says men make up 30 percent of his clientele.
Hair salons are bastions of style, trends and beauty, and they aren’t just for women any more. Yes, men still frequent the neighborhood barber shop, but more and more, men prefer to get their hair cut, styled and be groomed where their wives, girlfriends and the women in their lives go. It’s true, men are becoming more and comfortable being a part of fashion and the trends. There is no such thing as being labeled Metrosexual anymore, as a matter of fact that label is so gone - very yesterday. In fact, men’s hair styling is frankly big business for all of us in the salon industry. Facial hair and haircuts have become an art and a craft to be honed. Walk into Salon Hype on any given day, says owner Ross Bartolomei, and you will see our male clients, which is 30 percent of our clientele, having their hair sculpted and beards groomed. It’s a vital part of the salon experience for men. At Salon Hype, we’ve recently added a men’s shave and hair care line called Baxter of California. The line makes it easy for men to groom and enhance any look. Haircuts like the Ivy League, the Fade, the Businessman, and the revised version of the all mighty Fade have made its way back into America’s salons where clipper cutting has become not just a skill, but an art form. Hair color and treatments have also has become routine for men. Five years ago, most men would not consider coloring or adding a glaze to their hair. Today, it’s almost routine, which begs the question, what’s next?
