Ross Wins Round at US Open Jr. Qualifying

Burr Ridge's Gianni Ross won a round then fell in the final round of qualifying for the U.S. Open Junior Tournament in New York City.

Playing in his first US Open, Burr Ridge’s Gianni Ross fell in the final round of the U.S. Open Junior Tournament being played at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y.

Burr, 15, a Lyons Township student in La Grange, received a wild card into the qualifying event courtesy the USTA.

“I didn’t play well today,” said Ross, who fell to Simon Soendergaard, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-2. “I thought I could have won the match, but he was a big-time player. He was able to break me and I wasn’t able to break him. It was just a tough match.”

On Friday, Ross beat Lloyd Harris, the No. 3-seeded player from South Africa, 6-3, 6-4.
