The Village of Burr Ridge has offered a few safety tips for safely using holiday lights.
- Use only lights that have been tested for safety, look for the testing label on the cord.
- Examine lights for old, broken or cracked sockets, and frayed wiring. Discard lights that are not in good shape.
- Never use lights on a metallic tree. They can become electrically charged and shock someone.
- Always turn off tree and decoration lights when you leave the house or go to bed. Lights can short out and start a fire.
- Do not overload extension cords.
