Big City Treats in Our Backyard

Local "Cake Boss" provides professional treats from her home.

Adrianna Martinez is a Spanish teacher at . But when she is not teaching, she is in the kitchen of her Plainfield home baking and decorating edible creations.

Martinez can bake cakes that are on the small side all the way up to one to feed 55 people. Fillings vary as do decorations and whether or not the cake is simple or elaborate. By far, though, her most popular option is cheesecake torte, Martinez said.

A layer of cheesecake is added to the middle two layers of cake and filling. The best combination is white cake, chocolate cake, the cheesecake layer in the middle with raspberry filling between the layers, she said.

Candace Baker, MCHS social studies teacher said she never understood the phrase, “You can’t have your cake and eat it too,” until she had an Adrianna Creation’s cake.

“Her cakes are so beautiful and unique you will want to keep it forever,” Baker said. “ But it would be a huge mistake because they taste even better than they look.”

Lauren Sandeno, echoed Baker’s comments.

“Adrianna is a wonderful artist,” Sandeno said. “As an art teacher (MCHS) I know she has skill, creativity and wonderful technique.”

A simple beginning

It all started with enrollment in a cake decorating classes at the age of 15. A year later, Martinez’s expertise landed her a job at a local Baskin Robbins as a cake decorator. For five years she worked at a Naperville bakery, which specialized in wedding and tiered cakes.

During her time at the bakery, Martinez had her first opportunity to work with butter cream and rolled fondant, two techniques she uses in decorating cakes today.

The bakery ended up closing. She continued to work part-time at various bakeries before she made the decision to set-up her online business .

“Many bakers get compliments that their cake looks good, but it doesn’t taste good,” Martinez said. “ I fortunately get both. Not a lot of bakers can say that. I really like making people happy.”

To that end, she is happy to cater a cake to a customers' vision.

“I like it when I get a theme,” Martinez said. “It leaves open the several opportunities that I can do with a cake.”

Popular themes include princesses and sports logos. And Martinez makes her son’s birthday cakes too. He is four.

“Unfortunately he is not a fan of eating the cake,” Martinez said. “He likes the designs and he smiles.”

But others do love the cake.

“I have purchased three cakes from Adrianna and every time they are a hit,” said Jenna Ponio, head varsity cheerleading coach at MCHS. “The cake becomes the main topic of conversation at ever party that I have hosted with one of her cakes.”

David Anderson, guitar teacher at MCHS ordered a three-tier wedding cake with lemon filling for his wedding. It was decorated with white dots on the icing and with ribbon that matched his wedding color scheme.

“Everyone enjoyed it,” Anderson said. “It arrived exactly when Adrianna said she would have it there, looked exactly the way we wanted it and it was delicious.”

Although additional desserts were offered at his wedding, Anderson said the cake was the first to be eaten.

“I would highly recommend Adrianna to anyone looking for a skilled and trustworthy baker.”

Ann Rolla, math teacher at MCHS said her wedding guests were commenting on the cake during the reception and asked numerous times where the cake was from.

Martinez’s custom cakes are featured on her Web site, where you can also find information on ordering cakes.
