Channahon Board Members Honor Cross Country Champs
Student runners placed at state competition.

The Channahon District 17 school board members recognized athletes from the boys' and girls' cross-country teams Monday night at its regular board meeting.
Coach Mike Devine gave the board a rundown of the teams' victories during the fall season. Both teams took first place at the Beecher and Channahon area meets, as well as winning their respective sectional meets. The boys' team ended up taking first place at state, and the girls took seventh.
Devine introduced the teammates at the meeting, and each student received a certificate and a handshake from board members. Devine joked that he knew Channahon was the team to beat at out-of-town meets when the announcers pronounced "Channahon" correctly.

What held the district back this year was the percentage of disabled students not meeting state learning standards in reading and math. The state standard is 85%, which the district failed to meet.
According to Evans, the district is in good company; more than half of Illinois school districts also did not make AYP.
